OUT NOW: Ballistic Etude 3.1

Our brand new single, Ballistic Etude 3.1 by composer Mark Kilstofte, is now available for your listening pleasure. We love this piece and have been playing it for years. This one is near and dear to our hearts, and we're so excited to share it with you!

Winner of Latitude 49's 2016 Call for Scores, Mark Kilstofte's Ballistic Etude 3.1 is one of several works in a series of "Ballistic Etudes". In this version of 3.1, L49 unleashes a surge of sonic stabs with a furious drive as if Orpheus in the Underworld was a knife fight in a dark city alley. Mark describes this work as a nonstop thriller whose plot lies at the crossroads of the Orpheus legend and the Hollywood chase scene, action starts when our hero and his gal attempt to flee on their own terms and end up pursued, and ultimately overtaken, by a band of underworld thugs. Cast in the form of a caccia (a 14th-century hunting genre), sound-the-alarm ritornelli alternate with passages whose melodic lines nip at each other’s heels. Dedicated to the memory of composer William Albright.
