Andy Hudson

Performances by Andy Hudson have been hailed as “a treat for the listener” and have been praised for “an uncommon singularity of purpose, technical virtuosity, youthful vigor and a mature sensitivity.” An “inspiring” and “fearless” performer, he has performed widely in North America, Europe, and Africa and has appeared in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, at Chicago’s Symphony Center, and as a concerto soloist at The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Andy has been featured at gatherings of the College Music Society and International Clarinet Association across the world, and in 2011 he performed at the World Congress of the International Alliance for Women in Music. A top prizewinner at the MTNA National Woodwind Competition, Andy has received other prizes in the National Collegiate Solo Competition of the “Pershing’s Own” US Army Band and the Vandoren Emerging Artists Competition, among others. He has recently performed as guest principal clarinet of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Opera, and frequently joins the clarinet sections of the North Carolina Symphony and Greensboro Symphony. Andy was appointed Bass Clarinet/III Clarinetist of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra in 2020: other festival appearances include the Lucerne, Bang on a Can, Hot Air, and Great Lakes Chamber Music festivals.

A noted interpreter of contemporary music, Andy has premiered and commissioned more than 100 works to date and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on their MusicNOW series, at the New Music Gathering, and with Ensemble Dal Niente, Miami's Nu Deco Ensemble, earspace, F-PLUS, The Zafa Collective, and Chicago’s Grossman Ensemble. Andy's first book, "Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique," was co-authored with Roger Zare and is available on Conway Publications, and his debut solo album “halfway home” was released in 2022 on Potenza Records. Andy is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and the North Carolina State Chair for the International Clarinet Association. Andy holds degrees from Northwestern University and Columbus State University. He is an Artist-Clinician for Buffet Crampon and an Ambassador for Rovner Products. When he’s not practicing, Andy enjoys running, reading, playing guitar, eating local food, watching baseball, and collecting obscure instruments.
